Why is the TV too loud for everyone else?
Updated November 2026.
Television dialogue is a hard test. Actors speak fast, music sits under speech, and accents and mumbling characters are part of the show. When high-pitched consonants fade, dialogue blurs first, and the only control in reach is volume. Everyone else in the room hears the volume. You hear the dialogue, barely.
Partners usually notice this before the person watching does, because they live with the number on the screen. If someone has mentioned the volume more than once, treat that as information, not nagging.
What helps
Try captions before you buy anything. They are free, they work tonight, and they tell you something useful: if captions fix the problem completely, the gap may be dialogue mixing as much as hearing. If you still struggle with captions on, or if the same trouble shows up in ordinary conversation, take the hearing check.
See a doctor first if the change was sudden, is in one ear only, or comes with pain, drainage, or dizziness.
