Why everyone sounds like they mumble, part 2: What helps

Updated November 2026.

What helps, besides a hearing aid

None of this replaces a hearing evaluation if the pattern is persistent. But it does explain why the problem feels social before it feels medical, and why the people around you may have noticed it before you did. If they have mentioned the TV volume, or that you ask them to repeat themselves, believe them.

They are not complaining. They are giving you data, usually because they are tired of repeating themselves too, and worried about the same thing you are: that conversation, which used to be easy, is starting to cost something.

This site is education, not medical advice. It does not diagnose hearing loss and it does not replace a hearing test by a professional. If your hearing changed suddenly, changed in one ear only, or changed along with pain, drainage, or dizziness, see a doctor promptly. Do not shop for hearing aids first.

What to do next

Reading is step one. The next step is a short check, not a purchase. Take the hearing check, get a shortlist based on your answers and your budget, then compare the picks side by side.
